Services: Christmas As a result of the crushing poverty, high unemployment rates, and isolated locations of reservations, for many Native Americans, Christmas is just another day. Many of these impoverished Americans are unable to afford special items or Christmas presents for their families. CIN’s Christmas service helps to spread holiday cheer to Native American Elders, and distribute needed items such as blankets and personal care items to those in need.
The CIN Program works with volunteer Program Partners throughout the Southwest during the holidays to distribute Elder Care Bags filled with useful personal care and safety items. For the majority of Native American Elders in the Southwest, the items they receive in their Care Bags are "luxuries" that they normally are unable to afford or travel to a store to purchase. Each Elder Care Bag contains a special holiday treat, personal care products including lotion, shampoo, soap, and socks, and safety items such as a blanket, a flashlight with batteries, and a fire extinguisher.
These joyous events create a sense of community and holiday cheer by giving isolated Elders an opportunity to socialize with family and friends.
