Sweet Pea

Sweet Pea was exhausted and very sick when she arrived at Tuba City Humane Society.

We recently shared a Facebook post from Reservation Animal Rescue’s (RAR) Partner, Tuba City Human Society (TCHS), about an 8-month-old female Aussie/Catahoula mix named Sweet Pea. The beautifully colored rez dog caught our attention, and we just couldn’t get her off our minds. We asked TCHS about her story via email and they kindly replied with all the details.

Before being brought to TCHS, a volunteer foster-home-based rescue on the western Navajo Nation with a mission to end animal homelessness, suffering, and overpopulation, Sweet Pea was found all alone at State Trooper Housing in Kayenta, AZ.

When she arrived at TCHS, she was exhausted, covered with ticks, and had a pus-filled puncture wound on her side. Her jaw had been injured and they tell us she will eventually need a tooth extraction. But, thankfully, she can still eat.

After a few other discoveries (we’ll spare you the details), rescuers thought that she had Parvo, a contagious disease with a high mortality rate (91% if left untreated,) so they transported Sweet Pea to Flagstaff to get treated. There she was tested for parvo and luckily, it came back negative. Now, staff could focus on cleaning and treating her wounds and providing her with proper care.

Right now, Sweet Pea is being fostered with 2 other dogs. She enjoys playing with them, a good cuddle, and taking long hikes. Her foster parents say that she has such a sweet and gentle disposition and always wears a smile! "We are so thankful for Sweet Pea and that she is healthy. She shows such thankfulness when she looks at you."
