Give the Gift of Heat Many of the Elders we serve in the Northern Plains use wood as their source of heat in the winter - and even some summer nights. It is difficult for Elders to haul their own wood or to afford to purchase it from a vendor. It gets extremely cold and windy on the Plains in the winter. Temperatures drop below freezing frequently. The winter winds can be brutal, blowing up to 60 miles an hour regularly, making the temperatures feel even colder. Because many of the homes are in poor repair, heating costs are higher. It takes more to heat a drafty house. Combined with winter boxes, Elders can be more comfortable through frigid winters. |
